Buildings

I decided to start off my research with one of the most commonly associated things with Disney World...  The Cinderella Castle!

What is it made out of?
The castle may look like it is built of bricks, but it`s not. It was actually made of steel, concrete, and fiberglass.

It is only 189 feet, why does it look so much taller?
The designers made the proportions of the castle smaller and smaller as the castle got taller and taller to create the illusion of height. The top tower is only half the size of what the eye perceives!

What is inside of the castle?
Most tourists can only walk under the archway, where there are mosaic murals telling the story of Cinderella. Young guests can pay to get made into one of their favorite princesses at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. The most exclusive place to spend the night at Disney World is also at the Cinderella Castle, where only guests that win specific contests can spend the night. The suite was first intended to be an apartment for the Disney family, but Walt died before the castle was completed. For years, the room was used for a call room, but in 2005 Disney imagineers redesigned the space as an exclusive suite.

Are there any myths about the castle?
Well, yes. Some people believe that in hurricane force winds, the castle can be taken down and put away safely. This is not true. Although the castle can not be 'put away,' it was built to sustain very strong winds.

The next building I'm going to talk about is probably the second famous Disney building, although it is not located at any of the parks.....The Team Disney Building in Burbank!

The Burbank Team Disney building was designed by one of the most famous Disney imagineers, Michael Eisner.

The building was first designed by Michael Graves, as a boring building with a large pool in front with Pluto and Donald Duck. Eisner rejected the idea, telling Graves that he had to include characters in the building, not just out front. He then added a Mickey Mouse to the top of the building, but Eisner again rejected it telling him that the typical characters looked plain stupid. So, they decided to use the 7 dwarves, which worked out perfectly with the number of posts on the front of the building. The 6 bigger dwarves worked as the 6 main posts, and Dopey was added at the top, in a smaller space higher in the building. Directly in front of the building is an elegant pool, without the playful characters that Graves originally included. I'll include a picture below, so you can see exactly what I'm talking about...
